However, nobody believed Percy when he said that the man had just one big eye. When he was in third grade, a large man followed Percy around when he was at school, but by threatening to call the police, the teachers eventually got the man to leave. It is said in The Blood of Olympus that Percy has been kicked out of several military academies where they believed that paddling is good for the soul. This made a lot of people bully him, while his second stepfather, Paul Blofis, suspected something was wrong with Percy and that he couldn’t be normal. Strange things often happened around Percy, including a school bus exploding, and an aquarium being flooded, which often resulted in his getting into trouble: he was kicked out of more than six schools over the course of six years. Gabe spent much of his time playing Poker with his friends. Percy nicknamed him "Smelly Gabe", since he smelled like “moldy garlic pizza wrapped in gym shorts”. Percy despised Gabe, as Gabe would frequently bully Percy and abuse his mother. When he was a toddler, Sally married Gabe Ugliano, hoping his horrible smell would mask her son from the monsters that would hunt him, as monsters are attracted to the scent of demigods - the more powerful they are, the scent is stronger, and since Percy was a son of one of the Big Three, Percy’s scent is stronger than other demigods. As Percy grew older, his mother would tell him that his father had been “lost at sea” not dead.
Percy described his father's warm smile and a hand on his head as a "golden glow". However, Poseidon occasionally visited Percy when he was in his cradle. When he was just a baby, Percy was attacked by a snake but managed to strangle it to death, just like the famous Roman demigod Hercules. When Percy was a baby, his father left, as it was usual for the gods, and to protect him and his mother from Zeus, who could get angry if he discovers that his brother broke the oath, as children of the Big Three are too powerful for the gods' comfort. He was named after the famous Greek hero Perseus by his mother for good luck because his namesake was one of the few heroes who had a happy ending and died a peaceful death. Perseus "Percy" Jackson was born on August 18th, to Poseidon, the Greek god of the seas, storms, and the creator of horses, and Sally Jackson, a mortal who could see through the Mist.
